Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI engines to find, understand, and recommend in the answers they write. It is what people mean when they say AI SEO, answer engine optimization, or AI search optimization.

Where the Term Came From
The phrase "generative engine optimization" comes from a 2023 research paper by a team from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi (Aggarwal et al., 2023). They tested how the way content is written changes its visibility inside AI-generated answers, and found that adding things like clear statistics, quotations, and cited sources measurably raised how often content was used.
Since then, the field has picked up several names. Here is how they line up:
| Term | Where you will hear it | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Generative engine optimization (GEO) | Research, agencies, marketing press | Visibility in AI-generated answers |
| Answer engine optimization (AEO) | SEO community, voice search history | Being the answer an engine gives to a question |
| AI SEO | Business owners, most searches | The same goal, in plain language |
| AI search optimization | Enterprise and B2B buyers | The same goal, across all AI search tools |
| LLM optimization (LLMO) | Technical audiences | Visibility in large language model responses |
If a vendor tells you one of these is completely different from the others, ask them to show you what they would do differently. Usually the answer is nothing.
How AI Engines Decide Who to Recommend
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google AI Mode for a recommendation, the engine pulls from what it already learned and, increasingly, from a live web search. It then writes an answer from the sources it judges credible and easy to quote.
Three things tilt that judgment in your favor:
- Clarity. Your pages state what you do, for whom, and where, in plain sentences an engine can lift without rewording.
- Consistency. The same facts appear on your site, your Google and Bing listings, directories, and review sites. Conflicting details make engines hedge.
- Corroboration. Independent sources the engine trusts mention you: industry publications, comparison articles, associations, and community discussions.
Google says plainly that the same fundamentals that help in classic search apply to its AI features (Google Search Central). GEO keeps those fundamentals and widens the lens to everywhere your business is described.
GEO vs SEO
| Traditional SEO | Generative engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| The question | Where do our pages rank? | Do AI engines mention and recommend us? |
| What the buyer sees | A list of links | A written answer with a short list of names |
| Where reputation forms | Mostly your site and its backlinks | Your site plus the wider web the engine trusts |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Mentions, competitor share, cited sources, accuracy |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to find, understand, and recommend in the answers they generate.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
In practice, yes. Answer engine optimization (AEO) grew out of featured snippets and voice search, and generative engine optimization (GEO) came from AI research, but both aim at the same outcome: being the answer, or one of the names in it.
Do I still need SEO if I do GEO?
Yes. GEO builds on SEO. AI engines draw from the same web, and several of them run live web searches, so a site that ranks poorly or is hard to crawl gives them less to work with.
How do I know if GEO is working?
Rerun the same buyer questions on the same engines at regular intervals and track whether you are mentioned, how often, how accurately, and which sources are cited. Traffic from AI engines in your analytics is a second signal.
